Karl-Heinz Lambertz, President of the European Committee of the Regions, spoke at the round table "International Cooperation for Regional Development".

Karl-Heinz Lambertz described the main approaches and activities aimed at identifying barriers and implementing cross-border cooperation in the EU, mentioned the role of the European Committee of the Regions in this issue. Also he spoke about the legislative tools that emerge and develop through the implementation of projects like the Interreg. According to the expert, the Baltic Sea region can be considered as a pioneer and an example for the rest of the border regions.

“Previously, border regions were considered as a buffer zone with neighboring countries,” Karl-Heinz Lambertz says. “Today, borders are not considered as barriers, but as bridges — areas where Europeans meet to exchange experiences, to discuss and cooperate.”
